Edward H. Darrah was born in Granby, Massachusetts, on December 2, 1826, the third of eight children of Robert and Tina (Mitchell) Darrah. Edward was a grandson of John Darrah and Charles M. Mitchell,
who were soldiers in the Revolutionary War, both of them serving from Massachusetts. He came to Brookville in 1837 with his parents, where his father engaged in lumbering. He followed his father in the
lumbering business, becoming a sawyer in the Iowa Mill, and in 1855, he purchased a one-third interest in the company. In 1852, he married Hannah Jane Clark, daughter of
Elijah and Jemima (Kent) Clark. Hannah was born in Bedford County on July 8, 1826 and died in Brookville on August 31, 1910. Her husband died April 1, 1880. They are buried in
the Brookville Cemetery beside the Elijah Clark family. Edward and Hannah were the parents of three daughters.
