The Honorable Robert J. Nicholson was of Scotch-Irish descent, the son of Robert Nicholson and Elizabeth Johnson. He was born in Westmorland County, PA, on Feb 6, 1823. In 1843, he married Anna Anderson, daughter of James Anderson. They came to Jefferson County in 1844, where he became a teacher. He later was a lumberman and mill owner. Robert and Anna were the parents of six children.
