Charles Alexander Mayes was born in Westmoreland County, PA, May 14, 1823. His parents were Charles and Martha Mayes. His father died 4 March in 1823, two months
before the birth of Charles A. He spent his childhood on the family homestead in Sewickley Township in Westmorland County, and as an adult there, he served as constable
and school director. He came to Jefferson County in 1870 and purchased a farm in Warsaw Township. Until his death in 1872, he engaged in lumbering and farming, improving the land that he had cleared.
He was married on May 17, 1842, to Sarah Jane Graham. She was born in Derry Township, Westmorland Co., PA, on June 23, 1824, coming to Jefferson County with
her husband and children in 1870. Their children were Samuel, who was killed in the Civil War, Deborah, Martha, Joseph, Hasson, Louisa, Thomas, John, and Ella.
Charles Alexander Mayes died at his home in Hazen on November 27, 1872, and was buried in the Temple Cemetery, not far from his home. Sarah Jane died February 10, 1911, and was buried beside her husband.
