The original German spelling of Fossbenner was later changed to Vastbinder, then to Vasbinder when the
family came to Jefferson County. The oldest ancestor in Jefferson County was Adam Vasbinder, who was born in 1750 in Pennsylvania, and was a son of Jacob Fossbenner and Katherine Sortore. Adam married Margaretha
Hide, born 1754. Adam and Margaretha and their six children came to Jefferson County about 1802 or 1803, and cleared land in what is still Pine Creek Township. The parents died in Jefferson County, and were buried
in the cemetery on the land where they had settled. That cemetery has since been destroyed by coal stripping. Adam and Margaretha' s children were: Jacob, Henry, William, John, Andrew, and Adam. The oldest son
Jacob, born 1776, in New Jersey, settled in Pine Creek Township with his wife, Elizabeth, and resided there until their deaths. Both are buried in the Butler Cemetery. Eight children were born to them between 1813
and 1831, the oldest being Henry George Vasbinder, then Peter Sevanas, Mary Ann, Jacob Jr., Thomas Miles, Margaret, Nancy, and Elizabeth. The Vasbinders are my ancestors twice, with descent from two of the children of
Adam and Margaretha.
