John Smith Thompson was born in Huntingdon Co., PA, on August 11, 1830, the third child of Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (McGiffin) Thompson. The family
came to Jefferson County about 1836, settling in the area that is now Baxter.
They were accomplished in the trades of lumbering and rafting, were carpenters and farmers as well. In
1853, John Smith Thompson married Susan Richardson of Crawford County, PA, and built his home near that of his parents about 1884. Their children were George W., Frank who was killed in a
railroad accident, Harry who died in childhood, Charles R., Joseph G., Perry and Sarah E.
Mr. Thompson died at his home on July 16, 1909, and was buried in the Thompson Cemetery in Clover
Township beside his wife Susan, who passed away in 1900.
