Thomas Miles Vasbinder was born December 24, 1821, in Warsaw Township, Jefferson County, PA, the son Jacob Vasbinder and Elizabeth Fye, early settlers of the same county. He followed the family trade of farming and lived in the same area until his death on April 22, 1898. He married first Eliza Sartwell, daughter of Almon Sartwell, in 1847. They had 11 children: Almon, George, Allen, Anna, Hile, Charles, Lydia, Peter, Harrison, Martin and Birdie. Eliza died shortly after the birth of Birdie in 1874. In 1875, he married a second time.

The second wife was a widow, Samantha Smith Record, and three more children were born to this marriage: Birdie, James, and Goldie. Samantha died in 1924. He and Eliza are buried in the Butler Cemetery, Samantha is buried with her first husband in Richardsville.
