Mr. Uriah Bender was born August 31, 1844 in Millerstown, Dauphin County, PA, and was the son of Joseph & Polly (Mason) Bender of that place. In 1865, at the age of 21 years,
he came to Brookville to work as a stone mason and contractor. He arrived here on the day after the assassination of President Lincoln. One of his jobs was to assist in
building the Jefferson County courthouse in Brookville.
After he retired from active work as a contractor and stone mason, he engaged in
the retail business, and for many years he operated a grocery store on Mabon Street in Brookville.
Uriah Bender was twice married. His first wife was Annie Vasbinder, whom he married
in 1869. They were the parents of 6 children, Kate, Rose, Flora, C. A., H. B. and E. C. Annie died July 5, 1891, and was buried in the Zion Cemetery, in Eldred Township,
Jefferson County. On April 4, 1893, he married Martha Elizabeth Himes, who died October 4, 1933, and was buried in Brookville Cemetery. Uriah died July 1, 1928, and was buried beside
his second wife, Martha.
